The other day I was walking with Jackson on the church parking lot. We were on our way to a day at preschool. It was an unusual day for this spring. It was warm and very sunny. As we walked toward the church doors Jackson said, "The sun is so bright in my eyes!" Just then we turned to where my shadow was cast directly over my son. He sighed and said, "That's so much better! I like being in your shadow. The sun can't hurt me now!"
We quickly walked into the church and Jackson scurried off to his day at school. But what happened on the parking lot stuck with me. As I pondered Jackson's response to standing in my shadow, God began to speak to me. I was reminded of Psalm 17 where it says:
"Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies. Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings."
I thought about how many times the struggles of life were blaring down on me and I felt my strength sapped. I thought about the times that the difficulties of life made my spiritual vision impaired and I had difficulty seeing what was ahead of me. Then I recalled how when I sought after God, He let me rest in the shadow of His wings. It was then that I felt safe. It was then that I could clearly see. When I sought refuge in the shadow of the Almighty, I knew the problems of the world could not hurt me.
Like Jackson in my shadow, God's shadow doesn't make the searing heat of life go away, but it does comfort me and shield me from the affects of the struggles I face. I am certain of some things --- Trials and troubles will come in my life and they will impede my ability to see God's plan clearly. However, I am also certain that if I seek out God through prayer and His Word, He will protect and guide me as I rest in His shadow.
Maybe the trials of life are beating down on you like the harsh sunlight of summer. Seek refuge in the shadow of God's wings. The more difficult the circumstance, the harder you should chase after God so that you might find rest and assurance in the coolness of his shadow. The difficulties will come but as they do God is giving us a great opportunity to rest in His presence over us. I pray that we will find strength, protection and peace in the shadow of His wings.
